about

A song railing against the forced removal in 1828 of some twenty-six families from the townships in the immediate vicinity of Ben Hiant, Ardnamurchan, with the purpose of adding further acreage to the neighbouring sheep farm of Mingary. The bard, Dr. John MacLachlan of Rahoy, starts out describing the scene of desolation that lies before him on ascending Ben Hiant a year or two after the evictions and ends with a ferocious tirade against the proprietor on whose orders the clearances had been carried out, Sir James Riddell Bart. I first came across this song in a School of Scottish Studies archive recording of my paternal great granduncle, Alex-Dan Henderson.
